Iceland Star Sigurdsson Out For Eight Weeks, Faces World Cup Fitness Race

Iceland star Gylfi Sigurdsson will be out of action for between six and eight weeks due to a knee injury and will sweat over his fitness for the Russia 2018 World Cup which starts in three months, according to Everton.

Sigurdsson sustained the injury in Everyone’s 2-0 home win against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League in Saturday.

The former Swansea player could now miss the remainder of the English football season but could still make it in time for this year’s FIFA World Cup which starts in June, where his Iceland side will face Nigeria, Argentina and Croatia in Group D.

A statement on Everton’s official website on Wednesday reads: “Following consultation with a specialist, it is anticipated that Gylfi Sigurdsson’s knee injury, sustained in Saturday’s Premier League win over Brighton, will keep him sidelined for between six and eight weeks.”

Everton manager Sam Allardyce added: “We’ll continue to assess Gylfi’s progress on a week-to-week basis and the medical team will work very closely with him, as they would with any injured player, to get him back playing as quickly as possible.”

Sigurdsson, his country’s most important player, played a key role in helping Iceland qualify for their first ever FIFA World Cup, Russia 2018.

They will open their campaign against Argentina on June 16.
